I spent the summer of 2023 in the beautiful New Mexico desert and I wanted to make one item that was a culmination of my magical summer. This reflects the mountains, the desert floor, the water, the sky that I experienced.

I love to spend a morning out on my lathe. I spin these tools outside so when I’m creating these, I get inspired by my surroundings. Here, in the summer of 2023, I am in the desert of New Mexico and this pencil holder is what I saw in the sky one morning.

The coo of the quail, do you know the sound? Every morning at the Monticello Campground at the Elephant Butte State Park, I heard them calling each other as they ran in a line through the brush. The morning sky, the quail, the desert floor, it always makes me smile.

I’ve been an avid birdwatcher for over 50 years so I wanted to craft this pencil holder out of my memories of birding the eddies of Caballo Lake in New Mexico.

Carrots for Betty $40

While camping at Elephant Butte State Park in New Mexico, I’d go for walks every morning. A small cottontail that was named “Betty the Bunny” would be waiting for me at the corner each day. I decided to make this one in her honor.

Autumn in the Desert $40

Inspired by the colors found in the desert of New Mexico in the fall on the bottom, and African mahogany on top, this one for years of joy in your sewing room.

Bahi Love $40

Made of the heart of the palm tree, this Bahi wood was created at the Monticello Campground in New Mexico on a sunny Saturday afternoon in August.

Caballo Lake Swirl $30

This was crafted at Caballo Lake, New Mexico. I joined two pieces together, the bottom wider than the top for easier holding.

Needle threaders can thread both large-sized and small-sized needles and also sewing machines. The needle threaders are removable and reversible for protection and storage just like the seam rippers. They are made from sturdy steel wire and 2 wire sizes are included to handle all of your threading needs.

The Crafting

I use either acrylic or wood or a blend of both the create each item. The acrylic is handmade using a blend of pigments and a variety of techniques from resin artists in Oregon, Indiana and Ohio. The clip and the grip are chrome plated steel making the holder strong, durable and easy to use. Each item is carefully and lovingly created (fabric pencils are not included).

Purple Sky Smoke $40

I smoke a pipe while I make these on my lathe. The tobacco I like is from Ireland. Both purple (corcur) and tobacco are highly admired and was incredibly scarce in days of old. I made this one because I’m Irish and I love history. Read here if you want to go down a rabbit hole.

Made from Hawaiian koa wood, this exotic material represents strength and courage. It was frequently used to make swords, canoes and is very durable. A ribbon of glitter was added.

I was inspired to make this one after spending the hot summer in southwest New Mexico at the foot of the forest.

The seam rippers come with a small and large very sharp Japanese reversible blades made from manganese steel. The blades are also removable and reversible for protection and storage.
